Other national citizens who need a work permit to work in Canada have two ways to apply:

There are two categories of work permits in Canada i.e. Employer based work permit and open work permit.

Employer-based work permit:

In this category of work permit, you can work in Canada according to the conditions mentioned by your employer.

An employer-specific work permit lets you work in Canada according to the conditions on your work permit, such as you need to present employer-specific documents, how long the employer is willing to provide you contract and the location where you are hired to work (if it applies).

To apply for employer-specific work permit you need to present the following documents:

  • Employment contract
  • A copy of LMIA (labour market impact assessment)
  • An offer of employment generated number (for those who are exempted from LMIA)
    • (Your employer will provide this number)
    • This number is generated at the Employer Portal to submit an offer of employment.
    • Either he has to provide contract if not making use of portal.

  • Present any other document if demanded by the officer.

Make sure you follow all the instructions of the Canadian government.

Open work permit

An open work permit allows you to work for any of the employers in Canada except those who are not listed as ineligible or who fail to comply with the rules and regulations of labour market impact assessment. You can get an open work permit with some specific conditions to work in Canada as per the law. If you get through the work permit process then you as a temporary resident can bring your family with you to work, study or settle with you in Canada as next dependent family.
